AMALFI

Amalfi was one of the first Marine Republics established in Italy.
Here nature surrounds the cascading terraces with the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean.
Situated between the Lattari mounts, rich of citrus groves,  Amalfi is the pearl of the coast to which it gives the name.
Amalfi is an internationally known tourist town thanks to its natural beauties and its mild climate. Its history, its landscapes, the sea, the monuments are a wonderful and unique cocktail.
White houses on the rocks, ancient towers, delightful beaches get the town very picturesque.
Its tourist pier is very well equipped to allow visitors to go to the beautiful bays of Amalfi.

The Cathedral of Amalfi: The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Andrea. It raises up out of the steep stairs that surround overlooking its square which has at the centre the 7th century water fountain of Saint Andrea. Facing the Cathedral on the left there is the bell tower which is encrusted with ceramic tiles. Inside the Cathedral there is drawings, murals, statues, and other works of art that are of novel interest.

The Cloister of Paradise: As you enter, you are able to see the cloister which is  one of the most noted sites in Amalfi. It was built between 1266 and 1268, authorized by the Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio as a cemetery for its more renowned and highly merited citizens.

The Basilica of the Cross: For many years it was part of the Cathedral, now it is home to the Cathedral Museum and is used for important conventions and concerts.

The Naval Shipyard: Between 900 and 1000 A.C, Amalfi was involved in commercial trade with the most important ports of the Mediterranean. Here, the ships were built boasting 100 oars which transported spices, tapestries, perfumes and many other precious products originating from the Orient.

The Paper Museum: Paper, believed to be invented in China around 100 A.C. arrived in Italy thanks to commercial trading between the ports of Venice and Amalfi with the East. By the end of the 7th century, the 16 paper shops of Amalfi produced some of the finest handmade paper which was sold all throughout Europe. To this day Amalfi produces this paper which is used for artwork, limited editions and special occasions. The Paper Museum now holds antique manuscripts, engravings, prints, books, and machinery used in the production of paper.

Emeraldo grotto: The Emerald Grotto is nearby and is reached by steps or lift and then by rowing through exceptionally clear water in this marine cave is illuminated indirectly by rays of sunlight giving it a beautiful emerald colour of extraordinary depth. Reflected in the water are the marvelous golden coloured stalactites which are suspended from the cave roof. The road winds on towards a sight that suddenly bursts into view as you emerge from a tunnel gouged through a cliff. It is unbelievably pretty; tall, white houses, churches and towers perch atop rocky precipices in the Molini Valley facing a bay of azure blue with a backdrop of rugged mountains. Three miles of Praiano, the grotto is reached from the coastal road via a descent by elevator.

The stalagmites are unique in that someare underwater.
